Closed cassette: A headrail enclosing the roller on all sides with a fabric slot at the bottom. It handles the top gap the way a pocket does while looking like finished hardware rather than a built element, and it suits a wall with no depth above.

Outside mount with overlap: Mounting past the trim on all four sides, so the fabric covers more than the opening. The cheapest real improvement in this category. Two or three inches of overlap per side does more for darkness than upgrading the fabric ever will.

With glare, decisively. With heat, less than people assume. A blackout fabric on the inside of the glass stops the light but the energy has already passed the glass and is now being absorbed by the fabric, which heats up and re radiates into the room. You'll notice the difference standing next to a closed blackout shade on a July afternoon. If a hot west room is the real complaint, the products that address it are exterior solar shades and retractable awnings, which stop the energy outside.
Cellular and roller are the two we specify most and they behave differently. A cellular blackout fabric compresses at the edges and seals into a side channel well, and the shade itself insulates, which matters in a Zone 5A bedroom. A roller gives a flatter face and a smaller stack and works better with a cassette and a head pocket. Roman and drapery treatments can be lined for blackout and look better in a formal room, but they're harder to seal at the edges. The room usually decides.
It is if the lift is cordless, and that's how we'd specify it. Cordless lift removes the hazard rather than managing it. Product is built to ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, the governing product safety standard for corded window coverings, and coverings failing the inner cord requirements are a substantial product hazard by rule under 16 CFR 1120.3.
