Measure and level check

Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

Reasonably, with sensible material choice. The mechanism has nothing wooden in it, so the humidity swing that rules out hardwood elsewhere isn't an issue here. What is an issue is the same condensation problem every inside mounted product has in an Indianapolis winter, where moisture on cold glass wicks into fabric hems. In the aligned position you're looking out through sheer fabric, and sheer fabric doesn't care which direction light travels. During the day it's brighter outside so the room stays private. After dark with lamps on, somebody outside sees in through those sheer bands quite clearly. The offset position closes that. So the nighttime routine is simply to offset the bands, which takes a moment.

What does happen on tall units is that repeated partial travel lets the roll build slightly unevenly, and the position you thought was aligned lands half a band off. Because two fabric layers rolling together on a bare tube look like a mistake. On a single-layer roller an open roll is a legitimate clean look. On a zebra you're seeing a doubled roll with the band pattern wrapping around it, and it reads unfinished from below and from the side. The cassette also gives the top light gap somewhere to hide, and it keeps dust off the fabric sitting on top of the roll, which matters on a sheer that shows everything.
A roller gives you one fabric doing one thing, and you choose how much light it blocks. A zebra gives you two positions from one shade, so the same window can be open to the view or closed for privacy without changing anything but the height. What you pay for that is money, since there are two layers and a cassette, and darkness, since a zebra can't reach what a blackout roller in channels reaches. Neither one is a better product, they answer different questions.
